A photograph of Tony Hinkle from the 1920s. He played on the football, baseball, and basketball teams at the University of Chicago and earned nine varsity letters. Although he was offered a contract with the New York Giants, he started his career at Butler University as an assistant coach in 1921. Later, he became the head coach of Butler's football, baseball, and basketball teams and he even served as athletic director. In addition to his time at Butler, he coached the basketball and football teams at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, while he was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy during World War II.
